Schools Outdoor Skills Programme

A structured 3-5 day programme to expose students to the outdoors

Schools Outdoor Skills Programme

This multi-day, multi-activity programme aims to introduce learners to various outdoor activities. The activities are presented in such a way that the basic skills associated with that activity are taken on board by the learner. We will work with you to design a programme that meets your school’s needs. Duration is typically 3 – 5 days.

The activities have been chosen for their value in terms of life skills as well as for their fun factor. They are also sufficiently challenging for all the learners to have developed a real sense of accomplishment by the end of the programme. Safety is our main concern at Gravity and we use only qualified instructors and guides, sub-contracting to experts where necessary.

The programme is available with a more relaxed ‘experiential’ approach or a more structured, instructional approach including course notes depending on the requirements of the group.

We have two favoured locations – The Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve is situated in the Kleinmond/Betty’s Bay area, just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town. It offers river, ocean and mountain environments as well as a range of accommodation options to suit various group sizes.

The West Coast Biosphere Reserve is situated around the Langebaan Lagoon and West Coast National Park.

The programme can also be run on the Breede or Orange Rivers on request.

Details of Programme

This will depend on your total group size and needs but this will give you an idea of a typical programme in the Kogelberg:

The learners will divided into groups of approximately 8-15 with each group taking part in one activity at a time. The basic three activities offered are Rock Climbing and Abseiling, Hiking and Camping and Tubing. The programme is usually structured with each activity taking up one day, with a fourth (optional) day being ‘task day’ where the learners put into use all of the skills developed to perform a task set by the instructors. We can also offer an additional one-day Basic First Aid course for an additional cost, if required. Each of the activities is covered in more detail below:

Tubing on the Palmiet River

This activity aims to introduce learners to some of the basic skills involved in running rivers. We provide all equipment and APA qualified guides.

Rock Climbing and Abseiling

The abseiling segment of the programme is presented as experiential activity – an exercise in confronting challenges and working through them. At the same time, learners will be introduced to the basic elements of rock climbing and abseiling. This activity will be instructed by a qualified facilitator

This activity requires learners to spend the day hiking. They will be introduced to the concepts of minimum impact camping and how they can use the same concepts in everyday life. They will also explore practical issues such as packing, catering etc. There is then option to spend the night under the stars – a first time experience for many of them. This segment will be conducted by one of our experienced wilderness guides. Learners will need to bring good walking shoes.

Costs will depend on total group size, duration, activities chosen and venue. Please contact Sales at Gravity for a detailed quote.
