APA Guide Training

The River Guide course is designed for potential guides entering the industry and aims to equip them with the skills and techniques required to function as part of the guide team responsible for safety and rescue and group management on a swiftwater paddling tip. The course runs over three days and three nights and comprises of practical exercises during the day and lectures and discussions in the evenings.

Some of the aspects covered will be:

Paddling techniques
Ropework
Trip planning
Safety and rescue
Dealing with emergencies
Features and hazards of flatwater
Guiding & the law

The course is extremely practical and physical in nature and a reasonable level of fitness is required. The course prepares candidates to take the APA assessment, which is held separately and at a later date. The course is also suitable for anyone wanting to learn more about paddling and swiftwater safety and rescue. It is also recognised internationally through the International Rafting Federation.

The course fees include instruction, APA checklists and course materials. APA membership is COMPULSORY and will be charged for separately (see below). Boating equipment and transport to the course are the candidate’s own responsibility but may be able to be arranged through us if required.

Course fee: R895.00 (manual, logbook, rescue equipment and instruction)
Logistics fee: To be determined – usually around R500.00 (catering, accommodation, permits, shuttle transport at river)

COURSE FEES TOTAL: R895.00 + logistics

APA fees: R75.00 registration - new members (incl. card, badge and logbook)
R210.00 Annual membership fee (valid till end Feb 2007)

Assessments take place at a later date, once the trainee has logged a total of 20 river days. These are organised by APA and held periodically throughout the year.

Next Assessment:

The Trip Leader workshop runs over 3 days and 2 nights and is aimed at experienced candidates who wish to upgrade to Trip Leader Restricted status. The workshop will focus on advanced safety and rescue techniques, leadership issues as regards to group management as well as crisis management. It will include an overview of the SOP document, its’ purpose and how to compile it.

Candidates presenting themselves for Trip Leader (restricted) status will be practically assessed during the course. Assessment of understanding and knowledge will take place through submission of a workbook and SOP document after the course. The course fee includes instruction, food and camping fees & APA checklists and course notes. APA membership is COMPULSORY and will be charged for separately. Boating equipment and transport to the course are the candidate’s own responsibility but it may be possible to arrange these through Gravity if required.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COURSE

APA River Guide qualification or equivalent
Minimum 30 logged days as qualified guide
Level 1 First Aid
Current APA membership

Course fee: R895.00 (manual, logbook, rescue equipment and instruction)
Logistics fee: Depends on venue – usually around R500.00 (catering, accommodation, permits, shuttle transport at river)

COURSE FEES TOTAL: R895.00 + logistics

The workshop includes a practical assessment and the post trip written requirements form the theory assessment. I.E. there is no separate, later assessment.
