APA & IRF Guide Training

The River Guide course is designed for potential guides entering the industry and aims to equip them with the skills and techniques required to function as part of the guide team responsible for safety and rescue and group management on a swiftwater paddling tip.

The course runs over three days and three nights and comprises of practical exercises during the day and lectures and discussions in the evenings.

Some of the aspects covered will be:

  • Paddling techniques
  • Ropework
  • Trip planning
  • Safety and rescue
  • Dealing with emergencies
  • Features and hazards of flatwater
  • Guiding & the law

The course is extremely practical and physical in nature and a reasonable level of fitness is required. The course prepares candidates to take the APA assessment, which is held separately and at a later date. The course is also suitable for anyone wanting to learn more about paddling and swiftwater safety and rescue. It is also recognised internationally through the International Rafting Federation.

The course fees include instruction, APA checklists and course materials. APA membership is COMPULSORY and will be charged for separately (see below). Boating equipment and transport to the course are the candidate’s own responsibility but may be able to be arranged through us if required.

  • Course fee: R895.00 (manual, logbook, rescue equipment and instruction)
  • Logistics fee: To be determined – usually around R500.00 (catering, accommodation, permits, shuttle transport at river)
  • Course Fees Total: R895.00 + logistics
  • APA fees: R75.00 registration - new members (incl. card, badge and logbook)
  • R210.00 Annual membership fee (valid till end Feb 2012)

Assessments take place at a later date, once the trainee has logged a total of 20 river days. These are organised by APA and held periodically throughout the year.
